Straight Back Braids Tutorial for 2019 - Cosmo's The Braid Up - Cosmopolitan.com

Not only is winter harsh on your soul (anyone else not into the sun setting at 4PM??), it can also take a toll on natural hair. The cold temps and dry air basically suck the moisture out of your hair, leading to frizz, breakage, and really sad looking curls.

No, that doesn't mean you need to hibernate all season long to save your self/hair, it just means you need to try out a protective style. This week on The Braid Up, our hair guru, Stasha Harris, introduces you to straight-back braids. They're a cute and quick braided style that will keep your natural hair hidden away from the elements.

Here's everything you need to know before you get started:

1. Braid one large cornrow on the far left side of your head, all the way past the nape of your neck, down your back. Braid a teeny-tiny braid right next to it until you reach the nape of your neck. Alternate from large cornrow to small braid until you reach a total of six cornrows.

      2. Lay your edges with a toothbrush if you have trouble using a rat-tail comb—it’ll help you spread the edge control gel evenly throughout your hair. First, brush your baby hairs forward, then add some gel onto the brush, directing your edges toward your hairline in whatever shape you prefer.

      3. Wear a silk scarf to sleep. Frizz can instantly derail your new look, so be sure to wrap your braids in a silk scarf to keep your hair smooth while you get some shut-eye. If you’re not into wrapping up your braids at night, you can also sleep on a silk pillowcase—which protects your hair the same way.

      4. Dip the ends of your hair in hot water. This helps to completely seal your braids so they don’t start to unravel.
